Excerpts from The 20th Century Series, "Frank Lloyd Wright", CBS, 02/18/1962 From The Museum of Broadcasting Communications Archives.

This is a documentary from 1993 by David Grubin (written, produced, and directed) about the art exhibit under the Nazi regime of what they considered to be the most corrupting and corrosive examples of what they called 'Entartete Kunst' or 'Degenerate Art.' The exhibit, which opened in July of 1937, was meant to be laughed at and despised. I ran across it in a class on Modernism and Post-Modernism. The film is not generally available at the time of this writing (other than on VHS). Personally, I could think of no better backdrop for the ideas and pathos of expressionist art than Nazi Germany, shown by a great deal of actual footage (most provided by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art -- they had an exhibit of their own based on the event that same year). The music is similarly striking, including Schoenberg, Hindemith, and Wagner. All of the art shown, by the way, is referenced by name in the end credits, which I include.

Paolo Soleri talked to Floornature about his projects – those that have been built and those that exist only in his mind – about Arcosanti and Cosanti, what aspects of Italian culture that he has brought with him and what it really means to build naturally, even offering his reflections on world politics.

Arcology is Paolo Soleri's concept of cities which embody the fusion of architecture with ecology. The arcology concept proposes a highly integrated and compact three-dimensional urban form that is the opposite of urban sprawl with its inherently wasteful consumption of land, energy resources and time, and tendency to isolate people from each other and the community. Miniaturization creates the Urban Effect, the complex interaction between diverse entities and individuals, which mark healthy systems both in the natural world and in every successful and culturally significant city in history.

Mary Willingham reminds us that college sports connect Americans in two different and conflicting ways. Sports unite us in fandom, school pride, and the appreciation of spectacle. But they also unite us in an unacknowledged bond of silence--silence about the racial, economic, and educational injustices that make the whole enterprise possible. Mary Willingham's talk, rooted in her own experience of coming-to-consciousness, reminds us of the powerful connection between the pleasing spectacle of college sport, on the one hand, and the willful blindness and collective silence about its hidden injustices, on the other hand. She insists that it is time for the fans of college sport to come out of their self-protective cocoon and face some ugly realities. Known by many as the whistleblower of the largest academic scandal in NCAA history, Mary Willingham is an author, educator, activist and human resources professional. In 2015, she co-authored the book, “Cheated: The UNC Scandal, The Education of Athletes, And The Future of Big-Time College Sports,” which unveiled a corrupt academic system for student-athletes at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, home of the legendary Tar Heels. Her research includes studies on the NCAA and university admission procedures with regard to profit sport athletes, and their specific gaps in basic skill deficits. She is a co-owner of Paper Class Inc., a company dedicated to raising awareness about the need for NCAA reform and PCRead, a non-profit literacy organization. In 2014, she was in Taylor Branch’s Documentary, “Schooled: The Price of College Sport”, and has also appeared on HBO Real Sports and ESPN Outside the Lines. In 2015, Willingham was invited to brief congress over the failures of the NCAA to regulate college sport and the need for a commission – H.R. 2731. Last year, 2016, she appeared in Bob DeMar’s Documentary, “The Business of Amateurs”. Willingham currently works for KIPP Delta public schools as Regional Director of Literacy. This scientist deliberately published the plot of the TV series Breaking Bad in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. In doing so, he proved that the journal was a fraud. But he soon uncovered just how scary the world of fake science really is. Bradley Allf is an award-winning science communicator whose work can be seen in publications such as the Smithsonian, Scientific American, Undark and Atlas Obscura. Bradley is proud of his accomplishments in unearthing academic fraud: publishing the plot of the tv series Breaking Bad in a peer-reviewed scientific journal to learn about disinformation and epistemology. When he’s not working on his dissertation on public engagement in science at NC State (or trolling duplicitous research journals) he enjoys mountain biking, rock climbing and seeking out wild landscapes in unexpected places. The modern American scholastic system has been described as a “competitive achievement arms race,” and many students feel either (i) be crushed by expectations of success or (ii) become detached, demotivated, and cynical. In this talk, we will talk about a better way to approach your motivation for pursuing academic success. Micah J. Green received his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering at Texas Tech in 2002. He then entered the Chemical Engineering Ph.D. program at MIT. His Ph.D. focused on computational studies of phase behavior and rheology of rodlike liquid crystals; his studies also included a minor in early Christian history at Harvard. After finishing his Ph.D. in 2007, he developed nanotube-based liquid crystals and fibers as an Attwell-Welch Postdoctoral Fellow at Rice University. After several years on the faculty at Texas Tech, he joined Texas A&M as an Associate Professor in the Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering in Summer 2014. He has received the NSF CAREER Award, the Young Investigator Award from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and the DuPont Young Faculty Award for his work in the area of nanomaterial dispersions and morphology dynamics, with applications to gels, composites, and additive manufacturing. He is a veteran in the field of Economics and has donned many hats A professor by choice, he obtained his Ph.d from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He has been a visiting professor of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Simla, an Honorary Senior Fellow of the Institute of South Asian Studies at the National University of Singapore, a Visiting Scholar at the Columbia University and a Visiting Professor at the Turin School of Development of the International Labour Organization. He has worked on academic committees of the University Grants Commission of India and the Reserve Bank of India in various capacities. He is on the academic council of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences -the Institute for Human Development. He was the Director of the National Housing Bank and is currently on the Board of Governors of the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, New Delhi, the Rajasthan Shram Sarathi Association, Udaipur and the India Gold Policy Centre. He is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Quantitative Economics, the Indian Journal of Labour Economics and Macroeconomics and Finance in Emerging Market Economies. He is engaged in research of macroeconomics, development finance and public policy. He is none other than Professor Errol D’Souza – the Director of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.
